The AkwAtia Catholic Alumni is a platform for all former pupils of AkwAtia Roman Catholic primary and middle schools A and B. The platform was created originally by former pupils and friends of Master Amponsah, late headteacher of Akwatia Roman Catholic Middle School B. The original aim was to construct a library/computer block to honour him.
The group in further discussions agreed to expand the platform to include all former pupils/students and friends of Akwatia Roman Catholic Schools to mobilise all former pupils and friends to give back to the school, fraternise when necessary and to undertake projects to improve the school in general.
The platform is not an association. It is a non-partisan platform and secular.
The Alumni, with the help of the Parish Priest of AkwAtia Catholic Church, Rev Fr Augustine and the headmistress began work in the school in January 2022. The works included the refurbishment of the old school block and a room for the ICT facility. The refurbishment included plastering, fixing broken doors, windows, burglar proof, installation of 2 security doors, a new ceiling and electrical works. This was followed by painting, screeding of floors and tiling of the room. 5 ceiling fans were installed. 15 triple/double tables and 30 chairs were bought for the school. Additional work has began on the refurbishment of the headmistress office and the staff room.
The future plans are to build a toilet and urinal facilities and a new library block for the school.
The total budget for the ICT facility was estimated at 80,000 GHS. About 31,000 GHS was raised from cherished donors. This amount was enough to accomplish many of the works anticipated. The management of the funds was done by the Rev Fr Augustine for which the Alumni is grateful. There are a few outstanding work to be done including more furniture, PCs and air conditioners.
Prior to the creation of the Alumni platform and the beginning of the refurbishment, a team of five former pupils including Mr. Kofi Ankomah, Mr. Apenteng, Mr Charles Baah,
Prof Yaw Agyei, Dr Kwasi Darkwah and Dr Joseph Amuzu mobilised and donated 5 desktop computers to the school. This effort was led by Mr Kofi Ankomah former Parliamentary Candidate for AkwAtia constituency upon request by the Chairman of the school’s SMC, Nana Amofa, Gyantuahene of AkwAtia.
Also instrumental in encouraging the Alumni is Dr. David Sam, an Alumni who currently serves as the eighth President of Elgin Community College (ECC) in the USA. He made majority contributions to support the ICT facility. Dr Sam said he was privileged to attend the middle school for only one year (1969-70) under the tutelage of Mr. Patrick Anyane, a former headteacher who is unfortunately deceased. Just like Dr Sam, most of the Alumni who studied under Master Anyane and the other headteachers admit that they made significant impact on their formative years and still utilize the values learned from him in life today.
Other contributors to the project are Dr Samuel Adjorlolo and his brothers, Dr Joseph Amuzu, Lawyer Abena Asafu-Agyei and siblings, Mr Kwaku Sei, Gabriel Osei Owusu , Mr Opei,, Mr David ACKOM- UK, Mr John Adjorlolo- UK Mr Edward Boakye - US, Ms Barbara Agyeiwaa-US and Gilbert Adjei- Canada.
Mr Kingsley Sarkoh- UK, an Alumni also visited the school to donate LCD projector, screen, 16 piece of Jerseys, a football, a set of goal keeper's gloves and a device for pumping ball.
The Avor brothers and Mr Sena Akakpo- Canada also donated PCs for the rc school ICT project.
The ICT facility project is being handed over to the school on this 28th day of June 2022 at the Roman Catholic School premises at AkwAtia at 14:30.
